Rejection Can Be Redirection

Written on August 21, 2026

job rejection

By Edel Uí Catháin

At some point in life, we all experience the sting of rejection. It can leave us numb, questioning our worth, and wondering whether all our hard work has been for nothing.

In those moments, rejection feels deeply personal. We often see it as a closed door, a failure, or proof that we are not good enough. But what if rejection isn’t the end of the story? What if it’s simply the moment your story changes direction?

A few months ago, I was having a heartfelt conversation with a young person about rejection and the emotions that come with it. We spoke about the anger, loneliness, and isolation that can follow when life doesn’t unfold as we had hoped. As they shared their experience, my mind drifted back to the first major rejection I ever faced—a moment that completely changed the direction of my life.

A Journey of 250 Letters

In the early 1990s, finding work in Ireland wasn’t easy. After completing my Diploma, I moved to Dublin, determined to begin my career. This was long before online job boards and LinkedIn. Recruitment agencies were few and far between, so like many graduates of that era, I turned to the Yellow Pages.

One company and one letter at a time. Over several months, I wrote about 250 letters to organisations across Dublin, hoping that one would lead to an opportunity. While I waited, I worked full-time in a local pub to pay the bills.

After six months of silence, something finally happened: I was invited to an interview.

Then came the phone call I had been dreaming about. I was offered a job.

I was overjoyed. After months of perseverance, I finally felt that all my effort had paid off. That evening, I celebrated with friends, excited about the future that lay ahead.

The Fifteen-Minute Job

I still remember that beautiful spring morning in Dublin. Standing outside the office building, I felt a mixture of excitement, nervousness, and hope. Like anyone starting their first professional role, I wondered what this new chapter of life would bring.

As soon as I arrived, I was asked to go directly to the Finance Director’s office. He invited me to sit down. Then, with genuine regret, he explained that his niece had decided not to leave the company after all. The position I had accepted no longer existed.

Just like that, months of hard work and determination vanished in less than a minute.

I remember sitting there in complete silence, trying to process what I had just heard. My mind went blank. Had I done something wrong? Was this really happening?

He apologised repeatedly, offered me a glass of water, and even a lift back into the city.

I politely declined. I thanked him for his honesty, stood up, walked out of the building, and found myself standing alone on the footpath, unsure what to do next.

The Crossroads

As I stood there, I realised I had reached far more than the end of a job opportunity. I had reached a crossroads with two distinct paths in front of me.

The first was easy. I could go home, feel sorry for myself, replay the unfairness of what had happened, meet friends that evening to drown my disappointment, and spend weeks or even months carrying resentment toward a situation I couldn’t change.

The second path was much harder. I could accept that what had happened wasn’t within my control, clear my head, and begin searching for another way forward.

I chose the second path.

Instead of heading home, I walked through St Stephen’s Green. As I wandered through the park, children were laughing, birds were singing, and I allowed myself time to breathe. Gradually, the anger and disappointment began to soften.

Changing my environment changed my thinking. The walk interrupted the emotional storm and gave my mind the space to think more clearly.  Somewhere during that walk, an entirely different future began to emerge.

A New Direction

I suddenly realised that if I completed my degree, many more opportunities would become available.

I knew that universities in England would recognise my Diploma and allow me to enter directly into the second year of a bachelor’s degree. As a European Union student at the time, my tuition fees would be covered. I just needed to find a part-time job to support my living expenses.

I now felt hope, and instead of seeing a closed door, I began to see an entirely different path.

I walked straight to Bewley’s Café on Grafton Street, ordered a coffee, mapped out a plan, and contacted UCAS to request application forms. By the time my friends returned home that evening, they had no idea what a roller coaster of a day I had.  Instead of finding someone devastated, they found someone energised by a completely new vision for the future.  That night, we celebrated possibilities rather than mourning a disappointment.

Five months later, I moved to England to begin my BA (Hons) degree.

What Rejection Really Teaches Us

Looking back now, I realise that rejection attacks our identity long before it attacks our opportunities. It whispers that we’re not good enough, that we’ve failed, and dulls future hopes.

Yet the reality is often very different.  Sometimes rejection isn’t removing your future; it is redirecting it.

The job rejection in Dublin ultimately led me to new opportunities, experiences, friendships, and a career that I could never have imagined, even if everything had gone according to my original plan.  It also taught me one of the most valuable lessons I’ve ever learned: we cannot always control what happens to us, but we can choose how we respond.

As Maya Angelou wisely said:

“You may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them.”

Three Lessons That Still Guide Me Today

Whenever life doesn’t go according to plan, I try to remember three simple principles.

🧠 Allow yourself to feel: Don’t rush to suppress disappointment. Acknowledge the hurt, but don’t unpack and live there.

🌳Change your environment: Go for a walk. Sit by the ocean. Spend time in nature. Physical movement often creates the mental space needed for clearer thinking.

🗺️ Map your alternatives: Instead of asking, “Why did this happen to me?”, ask, “What possibilities has this created that I haven’t yet considered?”

These simple steps are far healthier than carrying resentment or anger—emotions that rarely solve problems and often prolong our suffering.

Looking Back

Today, I am genuinely grateful that I did not get the job. Had everything gone according to my plan, I would almost certainly have missed countless opportunities that shaped the person I have become. Sometimes the worst day of our lives becomes the day that quietly changes everything.

The next time a door closes unexpectedly, don’t assume the worst possible outcome. Take a walk. Breathe. Look around. Then ask yourself one simple question:

Where is this trying to redirect me?

You may discover that what feels like rejection today is actually the beginning of a better tomorrow.
