Stop unnecessary work – for your teams’ wellbeing!

No one likes busy work. And yet, not only do we all have it, but most managers actually assign it. We all have a few of those tasks that can feel a little pointless and sometimes it’s easier to assign them out…perhaps not easier for your team though.

If your team is stressed due to workload and deadlines you can assess whether you’re giving them unnecessary tasks and then figure out how to ease the burden. Start by reviewing your team’s workload regularly. Ask team members to estimate how much time they spend on each task, how central the task is to their role, and the value of the outcome/s of each task.

For those tasks that are low in value, ask your team’s suggestions on how to reduce or eliminate them, and work together to implement the solutions. Usually, through improving communication, suspending judgement and providing greater autonomy, any inefficient processes can be eliminated.

Keeping in mind that you may not be the one assigning the unnecessary work, you can also advocate for your team by insisting on clarity of information when your team receives unclear or conflicting directives. And always make sure your team gets the resources needed to flourish with wellbeing and performance.

If, on the other hand, you are a team member whose manager is assigning you more and more tasks to do, you can choose to be proactive and suggest an audit of your workload where you go through the same steps outlined above in consultation with your manager.
